AHEAD OF JULY

For the “We Insist! Live” event in May 2024 in Cernusco sul Naviglio, I was scheduled to perform as a trio and present “Kakuan Suite” (We Insist! Records 11). Shortly before the event, however, we changed our minds. Looking to the future, we decided to take advantage of the presence of all the “Pipeline” to prepare for the residency that we would shortly thereafter, in July, at the Cicaleto Recording Studio in Arezzo, to record “A Decent Run,” a work on the poetic texts of Tom Raworth. Not only that. Instead of presenting the project tracks, I put the group, usually accustomed to working from written material, in front of the blank page, the void of forty minutes to be filled with sounds and music for which we would all be entirely responsible. Improvising freely without guide outlines or plots with a large group is considered dangerous for many, even impossible. Aware of the risks, I was prepared to accept even a less satisfactory result. “Ahead of July” is the live recording of the concert, and the piece can be described as orchestral, collective, and even choral.
