PIPELINE
The Pipeline project is the brainchild of Giancarlo nino Locatelli, one of the founders of WE INSIST!
For years, the group has been pursuing a musical quest strongly marked and inspired by the figure of Steve Lacy.
Following oblique associations, Locatelli juxtaposes the term pipeline with the Japanese idiom Ishin-denshin: “What the mind thinks, the heart transmits,” thus to silent understanding to non-verbal communication.
Pipeline is a mobile and heterogeneous group of musical research and experimentation in which artists of different generations coexist, working in various artistic and musical worlds: jazz, classical music, radical improvisation, rock, experimental ambient noise, electronics, and poetry.
“It is a collective group. It is my group, but it does not bear my name. It took me years to come to this. I think the time has come, or returned, for collectivity, for the individual’s free contribution in the discovery process. Pipeline is indeed an ensemble but also an experimental project of conviction. It takes on a social and political connotation as each group member brings into play their desire for collectivity and understanding of the ‘other.’” (Nino Locatelli)
Pipeline constitutes the first nucleus from which the entire production of WE INSIST!
In 2018, the group Pipeline 3 & 5 released ‘US’, the first issue of the WE INSIST! Records. In the same year, as an octet, they released Pipeline 8 ‘Prayer,’ entirely dedicated to the music of Steve Lacy, and in 2020 under the name Pipeline trio, the ‘Kakuan suite.’
In July 2024, with a new line-up, the group recorded ‘A Decent Run’, a work on the poems of Tom Raworth.
