“The nucleus of the kakuan suite consists of seven pieces, originated by short melodic fragments suggested by the movement of the hands in relation to the instrument, of the fingers on the clarinet keys. Therefore, it has to do with movement, with dance. The fragments, elaborated through composition, have taken shape in generically tripartite pieces.
As in the classical suite there are an introduction and a coda, which in this case are improvised.
To achieve the ten bulls (tori) one of the pieces, or dances, is repeated twice (in this version irto).”
Giancarlo nino Locatelli
rito
The ritual referred to is the tea ceremony, the cha no yu.
This is the oldest of the seven pieces and was used, with the title Uomo Sotto, as soundtrack of Pietro D’Agostino’s short film “Il Piano dell’Uomo Sotto”, with Lou Castel and Irene D’Agostino (1997 LARS FILM VIDEO spa).
roti
Like the pieces that follow this is a reworking of old notes.
The roti is a bread made with stone ground wholemeal flour and widespread in Southern Asia. It presents a characteristic circular shape.
tiro
The archery. Eliminate the superfluous, forget yourself. The outside and/is the inside, and vice versa.
tori
Kakuan’s ten bulls.
To search, to discover, to see, to capture, to tame, to ride, to forget, to forget yourself, to come back, to mingle.
In geometry: a donut-shaped surface, from the Latin torus, a pillow with that shape.
irto
Of thorns and spines. Hedgehogs, sea urchins and succulents. A tenderness that can wound.
orti
The term “orto” (vegetable garden) has to do with the soil but also with care and work. In its abstract conception it can acquire countless meanings.
otri
Klein’s bottle (otre) is a surface where there is no distinction between inside and outside. Described in 1882 by Felix Klein, it is closely related to the Möbius strip.
